League Winners Cup Match

Many months in the planning, the League Winner’s Cup match came to fruition on the evening of 21st June 2022. Fareham – the winners of the Southampton Chess League (captained by Tony Corkett) took on Chichester – the winners of the Portsmouth & District Chess League (captained by Steve Smith) in a 12-board match held at Fareham’s home venue, the Duke of Connaught’s Own Club.

John Wheeler (standing between the captains) kindly acted as arbiter for the match and was pleased to see a match held in the best of atmospheres.

A photo shoot captured the event for posterity – before a fine-looking group of players took their places.

The Fareham team:

and the Chichester team:

Cometh the evening, both teams were missing some players as a result of covid interference, and although ratings somewhat favoured Fareham, a close match was anticipated. As can be seen from the individual game scores below, half way through the playing session it was far from clear which way some of the games would go, but as games came to a conclusion and results started to come in, Fareham starting amassing points – even in those games in which Chichester players had held clear advantages at certain points.

When the dust finally settled, the match result was a resounding victory for Fareham by the score of 10-2.

The time limit was 60 minutes with 10-second increments. Chichester had white on the odd boards.
